weaving silk

What is real silk?

Pure silk is smooth to the touch and has a luxurious feel.

Silk weaving follows the ancient (and formerly secret) process of taking silk from the cocoons of domesticated mulberry silkworms, Bombyx mori, and attaching their fibers to a large spindle to weave into thread.

It is an expensive, time consuming process. The sericulture traditionally includes killing the silkworm by boiling, steaming, or baking. In some rural cultures, it is custom to eat the worms afterwards.

Today, Chinese silk is mainly made in Suzhou 苏州, Jiangsu Province, and Hangzhou 杭州, Zhejiang Province.

All silk products sold on this website are made from the silk of mulberry worm.

How do I tell the difference between real and fake silk?

Light Test:

Hold your silk threads against a bright light and look for a pearlescent shine. The shimmering appearance of silk is due to the triangular prism-like structure of the silk fiber, which allows silk cloth to refract light at different angles, producing different colors. Artificial silk will give a flat white shine at every angle.

Burn Test:

Carefully pull out a few threads and light them on fire. Pure silk is organic, and will smell like burnt human hair and crumble into ash. Fake silk will continue to burn, smell like paper or plastic, and will coalesce into a molten glob.

How do I wash embroidered clothes?

To clean:

  • In a washing machine, use a gentle setting in cold/cool water.

  • You can alternatively hand-wash, and add fabric softener as needed to loosen up the embroidered areas.

  • In a dryer, tumble dry using low heat.

  • Hang-drying on a rack will also work too.
