Godzilla is a romanization of the original Japanese name Gojira (ゴジラ) — which is a combination of two Japanese words: gorira (ゴリラ), "gorilla", and kujira (クジラ), "whale".

Godzilla began as a metaphor warning against the dangers of nuclear proliferation. Director Akira Watanabe even patterned the texture of Godzilla's skin after the keloid scars seen on the survivors of the 1945 bombing of Hiroshima. Some storylines have portrayed Godzilla as an antihero or as a lesser threat who defends humanity.

Mothra is the second most popular character of the Godzilla franchise. Her powers include the ability to fly, emit colorful and blinding bioluminescence from her wings, and create powerful gusts of wind with her wings. She has a strong affinity for nature and is often depicted as a protector of the Earth.

Mothra and Godzilla featured in the 1964 and 1992 films.
